Three Provinces Festival 2005

Nkolo Spa, Vaal River

Set in lush, secluded surroundings on the banks of the Vaal River, you will find the most sparkling discovery in diamond country - Nkolo Spa. The resort was built around a natural mineral spring in 1966, which was discovered during the early 1900's, but due to a lack of the necessary funds and the depression, proper development was never done.

Only a minimum of facilities was developed, but that did not stop the people from the surrounding areas to come and enjoy the mineral bath. In the sixties the town Council of Christiana realized that their own funds would never stretch far enough to cover a development project.

The Provincial Administration founded the holiday Resort. The first visitors were allowed on the 13th of December 1968 and was named after the MEC Mr. Rob Ferreira. The Resort was known as Rob Ferreira Mineral resort.

On the 8th of October 1970 the resort was officially opened, during the festival that marked the 100 years existence of the town of Christiana.

In March 1983 it was transferred to Overvaal Resorts as a statutory body.

Overvaal was converted into a Company on 1st September 1993, Aventura Ltd. The name Rob Ferreira then changed to Aventura Vaal Spa. This resort was the first to re-settle white Rhinos in the North West.

In 2001 the Resort was the first Resort of the Aventura group to be privatized and Nkolo Developments purchased the Resort.

The Resort was still functioning as an Aventura Resort and was operated by Protea Hotels.

On the 1st of May 2003 the Resort was renamed to Protea Hotels Self Catering Resort Nkolo Spa. The name Nkolo is a Zulu name and means "The Great one".
